Extracting and Processing Information in the Lists

The lists display their information in a vertical fashion. How can this be done dynamically - eg MS Explorer branches can be expanded and collapsed.

A horizontal relationship looks very attractive, is their free software to generate the graphs. Can html or xhtml do it? Can it be done with dynamic html?
